RSD13 Kindergarten Admission

RSD13 Kindergarten Admission

Parents of children living in Durham and Middlefield who will be five (5) years old on or before September 1, 2026 must register to attend kindergarten in the fall of 2026 or apply for a waiver of attendance to hold their child out until age 6 at the Superintendent’s Office.

For children who will not reach the age of five on or before September 1, 2026 whose parents would like them to be considered for attendance in the fall of 2026, parents may submit a written request for admission in the fall of 2026 to the Brewster School principal by April 1, 2026.  If a family decides to submit a written request, we will contact you to schedule an assessment of your child for readiness to start kindergarten in 2026-27. All assessments will be completed by May 1, 2026.  Parents of children who engage in the April early entry assessment process will be notified of the district early entrance decision on or before May 1, 2026.  For decisions relating to early admission to the District, the decision of the principal and appropriate certified staff shall be final.

Please note that all kindergarten classes in Regional School District 13 will be located at Brewster School in the 2026-2027 school year.

What does this mean for Brewster School families new or current:
  • Families who have a child not 5 years old on or before the first day of September can make a written request by April 1, 2026. If you have a child born between September 2, 2021and January 1, 2022 and would like your child to be considered for early Kindergarten enrollment in Fall 2026, please find more information on the request process and timeline here.An assessment of the child, conducted by May 1, 2026, will determine admission to Kindergarten in the Fall of 2026.
  • If your child does qualify to attend kindergarten, families can still apply for a waiver of attendance at the Superintendent’s office, if they choose to have their child enter at age 6.
  • All current Brewster PreK4 students may remain in PreK4 for an additional year if not 5 on or before September 1st.

Frequently Asked Questions(FAQs)

Why did the State of Connecticut make this change?
CT is one of the last states in the U.S. to make a change to a September 1st birthdate for Kindergarten entry. National longitudinal studies indicate that students who begin Kindergarten at 5 years old in September have statistically stronger performance than students who enter Kindergarten at age four.

My child will not be age 5 by September 1, 2026 but will be age 5 by January 1, 2027.
If you have a child born between September 2, 2021 and January 1, 2022 and would like your child to be considered for early Kindergarten enrollment in Fall 2026, please note the following steps parents/guardians must complete:
  • The deadline for written requests to be considered for early entry to kindergarten is April 1, 2026. All parents/guardians must submit the Request for Early Kindergarten Entrance Form.
  • As a provision of the state law, an in-person assessment is required for all students requesting early entrance to kindergarten. These will be available by appointment during the month of April.
  • It is important to note the following:
      • Children must meet or exceed kindergarten readiness benchmarks in numeracy, literacy, motor, social, and language skills to be granted early admittance to Kindergarten.
      • This will be a determination, not a recommendation.
      • Early entrance to Kindergarten will be by exception.
      • Children will not be assessed more than one time.
  • Parents of children who engage in the April early entry assessment process will be notified of the district early entrance decision on or before May 1, 2026
  • Please note: If you move to District 13 after April 1, 2026 and would like to access the early entry assessment process, please request early entry via a written letter to Debra Murray, Principal.
  • Parents/guardians of children born after September 1, 2021 should NOT initiate registration for Kindergarten until they have received a final decision from the School District.

*If you have a child born between September 2, 2021 and January 1, 2022 and do not wish to request early Kindergarten enrollment for Fall 2025,  registration for Fall 2027 Kindergarten entry will take place in Spring of 2027.

What if my child is currently enrolled in the District Pre-K program and is not age eligible for Kindergarten?
We anticipate that students born between September 2, 2021 and January 1, 2022 who currently attend our District Pre-K program will continue in a district Pre-K program.

Will there be more Pre-K slots available in the District 13 lottery?
No, we do not anticipate having the additional space available to expand our current full-day Pre-K offerings.
Kindergarten Registration Process

Kindergarten Registration Process

There are a number of forms required in order to complete the registration for kindergarten.

Families should complete the pre-registration form found on the district website by following these steps:
  • Go to the district website at rsd13ct.org
  • Click on “Our District”
  • Look for “Quick Links” on the top right
  • Click on “Register Student” under “Quick Links”
  • Click the “Kindergarten Registration Form” and complete the form electronically

After the kindergarten registration form is submitted and approved, you will receive an email with directions to create a Powerschool account or to add a new student to an existing account. Once the account is created you will complete the registration form on Powerschool.

In addition, the school will mail the following paper forms once an online registration form has been initiated. These forms are due by Thursday, April 2nd.

  • Kindergarten Parent Questionnaire
  • School Entry Health Questionnaire
  • Verification of Residence Form and residency documentation
  • State of Connecticut Health Assessment Record
  • Preschool/Day Care Release form
  • Bus Form
  • We will need to see an original copy of your child’s notarized birth certificate.  We can make a photocopy of the birth certificate when you drop off your paperwork.

Proof of residency will be required for any child entering the district for the first time who does not already have a sibling in the district. As noted above, Verification of Residence forms are included with your packet. Please be sure to include the documentation as listed on the form. If you currently live with a resident, you will also need a Local Resident’s Statement that needs to be notarized. Please call the school and the office will provide you with this form. Please complete the appropriate form(s) and bring them to the office along with the required documentation.

Paperwork should be dropped off at the Brewster School main office by Thursday, April 2nd. The office is open from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day.

Health Assessment Forms

We understand that completion of the Health Assessment Record may be dependent on when your child is due for a physical. However, please understand that we must have the Health Assessment Record, including the immunization record (religious exemptions are no longer accepted for immunizations), before the first day of school or in order to attend Kindergarten Academy in July. If your child’s annual physical is after Kindergarten Academy or the first day of school, contact the Brewster School nurse, Nurse Fran Ciarleglio, at 860-349-7228.
